Bob Sanderson was the Head Gymnastics Coach at Abilene High for 16 years (1983-99) and has amassed a coaching career that spans 24 years between Abilene and Lebanon, KY. His teams at Marion County High School (KY) qualified for the state meet 7 times and won state championships in 1982 and 1983. During his 16 years at Abilene High, Sanderson led his 1989 team to a state championship. He also led teams that earned a 2nd place finish one time and a 3rd place finish on two different occasions. Sanderson coached 7 district champions and 4 regional champions while at AHS. He has also coached nine gymnasts who qualified for the National High School Championship Meet. He is a 2-time National High School Gymnastics Association Coach of the Year award winner and won the Texas High School Gymnastics Coach of the Year award in 1989. Sanderson is a 7-time District Coach of the Year and 4-time Regional Coach of the Year.
