On Saturday, August 10, the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame hosted PE Shotwell Day at the museum to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium.
At the special event, Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame Chairman Al Pickett led a roundtable discussion that included a brief biography of the stadium’s namesake, information about the stadium, and then iconic moments in the stadium’s history. In addition, several voices and names synonymous with Big Country football like Steve Warren, Lance Fleming, Jimmy Pogue and Chuck Statler shared memorable moments from their time on the sideline and in the booth.
There was an overwhelming sense of pride, nostalgia, allure and appreciation among those in attendance about just how special Shotwell Stadium is, and this event proved timely with the start of the football season right around the corner.
Thank you again to those who came to this event, and we look forward to hosting more community events like this in the future. To stay up to date with all of our happenings, please like us on Facebook.
