Richard “Moose” Stovall

Stovall played football at Abilene High and Abilene Christian College and was the starting center for the Washington Redskins in 1949 when he snapped the ball to Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Sammy Baugh, who was one of the inaugural inductees into the Big Country Hall of Fame.  After his playing career ended, Stovall became a highly successful high school and college football referee. In 1976, Texas Monthly crowned Stovall ‘Best Referee’ in their iconic “The Best of Texas” annual awards. Stovall is the third referee from the Abilene chapter to be inducted into the local hall of fame, joining Shorty Lawson and Curly Hays. All three of the aforementioned officiated in the Southwest Conference at the same time.
