The Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame is mourning the death of 2004 inductee and longtime benefactor Max Williams, who passed away on Monday, January 27 in Dallas.
Max grew up in Avoca and led his high school team to a state basketball championship. He was an all-Southwest Conference basketball player at SMU, and is considered the “Father of Pro Basketball in Texas.” Williams was the first general manager of the ABA’s Dallas Chaparrals, who later became the San Antonio Spurs. He enjoyed a remarkable career in real estate and the oil and gas industry.
Services are pending, but we do know burial will be in his hometown of Avoca in Jones County. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Here is a post from the Dallas Morning News on Max’s passing.
