Ray Overton
Overton is the longest tenured coach in Abilene Cooper history, spending 19 seasons at the school, including 11 years as head coach compiling a 69-40-2 record. A graduate of Paint Creek High School in 1941, he went to Texas A&M for a year and then joined the Air Force during World War II. He finished up his college education at Texas A&M and returned to the family farm at Paint Creek in 1948. The Paint Creek superintendent talked him into becoming the school’s head football coach when the previous coach quit two days before the start of the season. He then spent 15 years coaching at Haskell, 10 as the Indians’ head coach, before joining the Cooper staff. After leaving Cooper, he spent 10 more years as the head coach at Irving MacArthur.
