Football season is just around the corner, and the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame is celebrating with PE Shotwell Day on Saturday, August 10 at the Museum located inside the Mall of Abilene.
Admission will be free to the museum all day.
There will be a special program at 11 a.m. to highlight P.E. Shotwell’s career and give a history of Shotwell Stadium.
This is the 65th anniversary of Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium, which has a remarkable history in itself. But do you know who P.E. Shotwell was for whom the stadium was named? He was one of the most successful football coaches in early Texas high school history. In fact, the museum has a picture of his first team at Cisco in 1916.
Also, several guest speakers will share interesting facts and stories about memorable games played at Shotwell over the years. For example, did you know the longest field goal in football history was kicked at Shotwell Stadium?
The stadium has hosted numerous state championship games, and every high school and college team in Abilene has played at Shotwell Stadium at one time or another. Many Big Country teams have played postseason games at Shotwell as well.
Again, admission will be free for the program and all day Saturday, Aug. 10. Donations are encouraged to help support the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame.
